Man Allegedly Threatens To Blow Up Santa Cruz Congressman After Rejected Lunch Offer
SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) - A homeless man has been arrested for threatening to kill Congressman Sam Farr, said the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.
Stephen Brown walked into Congressman Farr's office in Santa Cruz Monday and asked his aid out to lunch, said deputies. When she refused, Brown allegedly walked out of the office saying he was going to wait for Congressman Farr and "blow up the county building," reports Salinas CBS Affiliate KION.
The aid called 911 to report the incident and a county-wide alert was sent to all local law enforcement agencies.
Brown was found a few hours later at a military recruiting office in Capitola. Police were initially called to the office because Brown was causing a "disturbance." After a struggle, the suspect was arrested, said deputies.
He was charged with making a bomb threat and a terrorist's threat. Investigators said there was no evidence Brown was actively pursuing plans to harm Congressman Farr or others in the County building.
The suspect, a 72-year-old transient, is in custody at the Santa Cruz County Jail with a bail amount of $10,000.
