Man Shot During Argument Outside Of Bayfair Mall In San Leandro; Suspect Remains At Large
SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- Police are trying to locate a suspect who shot a man in the leg in the Bayfair Center mall parking lot in San Leandro Monday morning, police said.
The shooting was reported around 10:50 a.m. at the shopping center located at 15555 E. 14th St.
San Leandro police Lt. Rick DeCosta said in a statement it appears that two men got into an argument inside a shoe store near Macy's and continued arguing in the parking lot.
At one point, one of the men pulled out a gun and fired, striking the victim in the leg.
"I thought it was like a firecracker," said one witness who wished to stay anonymous. "Then we heard multiple shots. I told my kids to get on the ground. I didn't hear anymore shots, looked forward and saw a guy that was shot in the leg saying 'I'm bleeding, I'm bleeding, I need help.'"
When officers arrived on scene, the victim had been transported to a local hospital by a citizen who was also at the mall. The suspect remains at large.
The victim's injury does not appear to be life threatening, according to DeCosta.
The motive for the shooting has not been determined as investigators continue interviewing witnesses. But it appears to be an isolated incident with the victim being the intended target, police said.
Investigators will also be reviewing surveillance footage from the shopping center in an attempt to identify the suspect, he said.
The suspect is described only as a black man in his late teens to early 20s who is about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighs roughly 140 to 150 pounds and wore a white shirt and blue jeans, according to DeCosta.
