Man Likely To Serve 8 Years In Fatal Oakland Shooting
OAKLAND (CBS / AP) -- A 25-year-old man convicted of a fatal shooting on a busy Oakland street has been sentenced to a term that will have likely serving about eight years in prison.
Floyd Tatum was facing a possible life sentence when he was charged with murder in connection with the 2006 killing of 36-year-old Victor Diaz.
But jurors in February found Tatum guilty of a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter after hearing him testify.
Tatum told the jury that he shot Diaz because he thought Diaz was armed with a gun as he approached him on Oakland's International Boulevard.
The Oakland Tribune reports that Tatum was sentenced Friday to six years on the voluntary manslaughter charge and 10 years on a gun charge.
The newspaper says because of credits for time served and future credits, Tatum will most likely serve about eight years.
