Man Killed In Mountain View House Fire Involving Explosive Materials
MOUNTAIN VIEW (CBS SF) -- Neighbors tried to save a person who was killed in a home fire in Mountain View Thursday morning.
Firefighters responded to neighbors' reports of a fire at a single-family home in the 700 block of Lola Lane at around 3 a.m.
Flames were shooting through the roof as firefighters arrived. They went inside and found an adult man dead inside a bedroom.
The fire burned the main power line to the house that dropped the live electrical wire to the backyard. The blaze then traveled to the garage and heated up some live ammunition. Pops and explosions could be heard as rounds were going off.
Neighbor Gary MacLeod tried to wake up his neighbor, but it was too late.
"I was on the front, pounding on his window because I knew where his bedroom was," McCloud said. "By accident I broke the glass ... and this big plume of big smoke came out. So I knew at that time there wasn't anything I could do because the smoke was too thick."
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
"(He was a) wonderful guy, had a great heart," McCloud said. "It's really hard to see someone's life come to end like that."
