Suspect Killed, Police Dog Hurt In 2nd CHP Shooting In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Investigators Wednesday released a photo of a car being sought by authorities in connection with an incident in which California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a suspect in Oakland on Tuesday night.

At about 9 p.m. Tuesday, two CHP officers initiated a traffic stop on a newer-model Toyota SUV in the 5200 block of Wentworth Avenue, Oakland police Officer Johnna Watson said.

The driver pulled over, and a passenger exited the car and fled on foot. He was seen armed with a handgun, Watson said.

A CHP K-9 unit was deployed, and the two officers pursued the man.  The police dog caught up with the suspect and both officers shot him, according to Watson.

Watson said the officers administered CPR to the suspect until medical personnel arrived. He died at the scene.

The police dog was also hit by gunfire but is expected to survive.

A loaded weapon was recovered from the man.

Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV drove off and remains at large. Investigators were trying to track down the car, described as possibly a silver Toyota Sequoia with red-and-white paper license plates.

Police were asking the public for help in locating the driver and any other passengers. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Oakland police at (510) 238-3821.

The incident was the second time that day that CHP officers opened fire on a suspect in Oakland.

At about 3 a.m. Tuesday, a CHP officer shot and killed a driver of a car after a car chase that ended in a cul-de-sac in the 5700 block of East 15th Street.

That driver, later identified as 19-year-old Antonio Mestas, of Oakland, had crashed a silver BMW SUV into two parked cars and then jumped out of the car, according to the CHP.

Mestas allegedly approached the two officers with a firearm in his hand, prompting them to shoot him, CHP officials said.

The officers attempted to administer CPR to Mestas, but he was pronounced dead a short time later by emergency responders, according to the CHP.
