Man Killed During San Jose Party Identified
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A man who was killed during a San Jose party allegedly attended by members of several Vietnamese street gangs on Saturday has been identified as Viet Tran, police said Tuesday.
Tran, 37, a San Jose resident, was shot at least once outside the party at Elite Car Audio and Performance at 2010 Senter Road, where police had to fire projectiles to subdue some people, police Officer Albert Morales said.
Police were dispatched to that location around 2:45 a.m. and found Tran lying wounded in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officers detained about 25 people outside who had attended the party, Morales said.
When officers tried to enter the building, several people barricaded themselves behind locked doors while others hid, according to police.
During their search, which police described as high-risk, officers fired so-called less-than-lethal projectiles at four individuals who did not comply with orders to leave, Morales said.
Officers believe that the shooting stemmed from an altercation that began inside the building during the party and spilled outdoors, Morales said.
The party involved members of several Vietnamese street gangs, but the suspects in the shooting remain at large and the motive is still being investigated, Morales said.
Tran's death marked San Jose's 11th homicide this year, Morales said.
