Man Killed By Wrong-Way Driver On Highway 24 In Lafayette
LAFAYETTE (CBS SF) -- A 51-year-old Pittsburg man has been identified as the victim in a fatal crash caused by an alleged drunk driver on state Highway 24 in Lafayette early Friday morning, according to a Contra Costa County coroner's deputy.
Alvaro Santos Cruz was struck and killed around 1:30 a.m. when a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into his Geo Metro on westbound Highway 24 east of St. Stephens Road, according to California Highway Patrol Officer John Fransen.
That collision caused the Geo Metro to sideswipe a Buick Century, he said.
Cruz was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the Buick was taken to a hospital with complaints of back pain.
The wrong-way driver, identified as 20-year-old Annelise McKay of Brentwood, was taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek with minor injuries, Fransen said.
After being treated, she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to Fransen.
Westbound state Highway 24 was closed for about three hours as a result of the crash
