Man Hit, Killed By Caltrain At Palo Alto Station

PALO ALTO (BCN) -- A Caltrain vehicle hit and killed a 24-year-old Sunnyvale man at the Palo Alto station Monday night, an agency spokeswoman said.

The unidentified man was killed around 7:30 p.m. by a southbound train carrying approximately 115 passengers, Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn said.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the person acted intentionally, Dunn said.

The train, No. 284, makes local stops between San Francisco and Menlo Park and was not scheduled to stop at the Palo Alto station, Dunn said.

The train stopped north of the Stanford station, Dunn said, and emergency personnel were responding to the scene as of 8:25 p.m.

Trains are currently operating in both directions on the northbound track in the area of the fatality.

Dunn said that Caltrain is authorized to operate at a maximum speed of 79 mph.

This is the fourth Caltrain fatality of the year and the first since a 52-year-old Sunnyvale man was struck in Sunnyvale on Feb. 3.

Eleven people died last year on Caltrain tracks, and there were 19 Caltrain-related fatalities in 2009.
