Man Found Dead In U-Haul Truck On Christmas Identified
HAYWARD (CBS SF) -- A man who was found dead inside a U-Haul truck at the Hayward BART station on Christmas Day after an officer-involved shooting was identified by the Alameda County coroner Monday as 40-year-old Jason Anderson, whose last known address was in Bay Point.
Coroner's bureau officials are withholding Anderson's cause of death while BART police continue their investigation into how he died and his ties to the suspect who shot a police officer in the arm and was wounded by return fire.
BART spokesman Taylor Huckaby identified the suspect as 27-year-old Charles K. Goetting.
According to BART Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Jennings, Goetting was pushing the U-Haul truck through the parking garage at the Hayward station at about 11:11 a.m. on Christmas Day when two officers stopped him.
Jennings said the primary officer learned Goetting's identity and when he ran Goetting's name through dispatch he learned that Goetting was on probation with a search clause.
When the officer went to search Goetting, he resisted and reached for his waistband, pulled out a gun and shot several rounds, according to Jennings.
Goetting shot one of the officers in the arm but the second officer returned fire and wounded Goetting, Jennings said.
Goetting and the injured officer were both transported to local hospitals.
The officer was treated and released but Goetting underwent surgery and is in stable condition, according to BART police.
Transit agency spokesman Taylor Huckaby said Monday that the incident is still under investigation and Goetting hasn't yet been formally charged.
Huckaby said Goetting has prior felony convictions in Contra Costa and Alameda counties.
