Man Fires Assault Rifle During Hayward Apartment Home Invasion

HAYWARD (CBS SF) - Police were looking for a suspect who fired an AK-47 assault weapon inside a Hayward apartment Tuesday morning then fled with the residents' cash.

Officers responded at about 6:25 a.m. Tuesday to two emergency calls in the 1900 block of B Street—one about a burglary and another from someone who reported hearing gunshots, Hayward police Sgt. Mark Ormsby said.

When police arrived at the address, officers learned that the calls were about the same incident, Ormsby said.

Investigators were told that earlier that morning, a male acquaintance of the residents - a boyfriend and girlfriend who are both 21- had visited the apartment and gotten into an argument with them about money he owed them, police said.

During the argument, the boyfriend and the visitor got into a physical fight, Ormsby said.

The visitor then left but returned a short time later, broke the front living room window and climbed through it armed with an AK-47 assault rifle.

When the occupants retreated to a bedroom, the intruder fired a shot through the living room wall that went into the bedroom but did not hit anyone, Ormsby said.

He then shot another round through the bedroom door that also missed the occupants, Ormsby said.

The boyfriend then climbed out a back window, Ormsby said.

At that point, the armed male entered the bedroom and asked the woman where she kept her money, Ormsby said. He then stole an undisclosed amount of cash from the living room and fled.

Police have not yet released a description of the suspect.
