Two Men Shot On I-780 In Benicia; Seek Help At McDonald's
BENICIA (CBS SF) – Two men were shot by the driver of a passing truck while traveling on Interstate Highway 780 in Vallejo Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Arturo Venegas, 19, of Vallejo, was driving eastbound on the highway in a white 1998 Oldsmobile Aurora with passenger Daniel Rodriguez, 20, of Benicia, near the Glen Cove Parkway off-ramp shortly before 8 p.m., CHP officials said.
KCBS' Holly Quan Reports:
A light blue pickup truck drove up alongside their car and the driver fired four or five shots at the two men.
Both men were struck by the gunfire and Rodriguez assisted Venegas in driving the car to the East Second Street off-ramp in Benicia and into the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant at 1602 E. Second St.
Rodriguez tried to carry Venegas into the restaurant but Venegas collapsed in the entrance, CHP officials said.
Benicia police responded to the scene and the CHP took over the investigation when it was determined that the shooting occurred on the highway.
Venegas was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center for major injuries. Rodriguez's injuries were minor, according to the CHP. Venegas was in stable condition Friday afternoon.
The driver of the pickup truck was described as a light-skinned man with a black ponytail. His truck was described as light blue, with an extra cab, and was possibly a Chevrolet, CHP officials said.
