Pedestrian, Dog On Tracks Killed By Amtrak Train In Hayward
HAYWARD (KCBS) - An Amtrak train hit and killed a person and a dog on the tracks in Hayward Monday morning.
A Hayward fire spokesman said a man walking a dog and pushing his bicycle was hit and killed by a southbound Capitol Corridor train at around 7:45 near the intersection of Soto Road and Orchard Avenue.
There is no train crossing in the area, according to officials.
The man who was in his late 20s to mid 30s was dead at the scene, according to officials.
The train involved in the collision was southbound Capitol Corridor train #523 traveling between Sacramento and San Jose, according to an Amtrak spokeswoman. The incident took place just south of Amtrak's Hayward station.
The incident was causing delays on Amtrak's Capitol Corridor route. While an Amtrak spokeswoman said trains can be re-routed around the area, it's not clear how long the delays will be.
Trains 527 and 528 are going to be using different tracks to avoid delays.
The 109 passengers aboard the train involved will remain at the scene until the coroner arrives.
