Man Detained After Hours-Long Standoff In San Leandro
SAN LEANDRO (BCN) -- A "despondent" man was detained for psychiatric evaluation after an hours-long standoff with police at the San Leandro Marina this morning, a police sergeant said.
A patrol officer was dispatched around 6:40 a.m. to the marina's parking lot for a report of someone driving erratically, San Leandro police Sgt. Rick DeCosta said.
The officer arrived and saw a van traveling around the lot before it went down the boat launch ramp and into the water, DeCosta said.
The front part of the van was submerged, and the man inside the vehicle refused to get out.
Police negotiators talked to the man, who was unarmed, for about three hours.
"It didn't appear as though he was going to come out of the van on his own," DeCosta said.
Investigators also believed the vehicle became disabled due to water in the engine, so a tow truck was brought to the area.
Officers broke two rear windows of the van and attached a cable from the tow truck, which dragged the vehicle out of the water, DeCosta said.
The man, whose name has not been released, was pulled out of the car and taken into custody for psychiatric evaluation, DeCosta said.
"It appeared as though he was despondent over something, but I don't know what exactly it was," he said.
