Man Crossing Tracks Killed By Amtrak Train In East Bay
RICHMOND (CBS SF) -- A man was fatally struck by an Amtrak Capitol Corridor train in the East Bay on Monday morning, authorities said.
The victim was struck around 8:25 a.m. on the tracks between Sixth Street in Richmond and Rumrill Boulevard in San Pablo, Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham said.
The man had tried to get through the railroad crossing by going around an arm barrier but did not make it across in time, Richmond police spokeswoman Lt. Bisa French said.
The man, whose identity is not being released until his next of kin is notified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The train that struck the man, which travels between Sacramento and San Jose, was stopped for more than 90 minutes because of the death, Graham said.
Passengers were eventually unloaded from the train and put on another one behind it. That train used the other tracks in the area to take them to their destination, she said.
Other trains were delayed by as much as 40 minutes while traveling through the area until the tracks were cleared shortly before noon, Graham said.
