Man Begins Cross-Country Trek To Benefit Cancer Awareness
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco's Ocean Beach was the starting point on Saturday for a man walking 3, 100 miles across the country to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer.
Norman Horn, the founder and organizer of Coast to Coast FTK is shaving his beard and head in honor of the kids fighting cancer and now he's strapping on a backpack and heading out for what he hopes will be a seven month trek to Atlantic City.
"I plan to average a little more than 15 miles a day, in total," he said. "I'm going to try to stay as central as I can and go east the whole time to Atlantic City."
The Penn State alumnus, who for a decade has been part of a group that raises money for pediatric cancer through dance marathons, will accept no rides -- except, he said, if he has to make it to an event or speaking engagement.
Horn said he will be pitching his tent at night, or getting help from friends.
"Penn State alumni have also volunteered to house me along the way," he said.
Sponsors got him going and he hopes his over 7 million steps will bring in about $100,000 for childhood cancer, families and research.
