Man Charged For Sexual Battery Against Woman Near Oakland's MacArthur BART Station
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A 24-year-old man was arrested for sexual battery against a woman on Thursday morning near the MacArthur BART station in Oakland, police said.
Carlos Contrerasanguian was arrested following the sexual battery on Thursday morning in the area of West MacArthur Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, police said.
At about 9:20 a.m. on Thursday the suspect approached a 22-year-old woman from behind. The man grabbed the woman and inappropriately touched her before fleeing, police said.
Witnesses and the victim provided a description to the police.
During a search of the area, officers found the suspect and arrested him in connection with the crime.
Investigators are in the process of determining if Contrerasanguian is responsible for similar incidents of women being assaulted on city streets.
Police said the community's informed participation helped officers make the arrest.
Oakland police said that the Alameda County District Attorney's Office charged Contrerasanguian on Friday for sexual battery.
The Oakland Police Department is reminding citizens to remain aware of their surroundings and not to be distracted by cellphones in public.
Residents are advised to walk in well-lit and populated areas, be especially alert when entering and exiting their vehicles, and remember to lock car doors after entering their vehicle.
Anyone who sees someone or something suspicious is urged to call 911.
