Man Pulled From Trench Outside Brentwood Home

BRENTWOOD (CBS 5) -- Emergency crews successfully extricated a man who was stuck in a trench in Brentwood Wednesday evening.

Emergency crews responded to a trench in front of 1594 Dawnview Drive at 5:23 p.m.

"What they found was chest deep with the dirt around him, so they immediately started to stabilize the trench," said Chief Hugh Henderson of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District.

"He was conscious, he was able to answer questions. He was complaining of some pain to his legs," Henderson added.

Crews shored up the sides of the trench and pulled the man to safety around 8:30 p.m.

"This was a pretty slow, methodical rescue," Henderson said.

The man, a 50-year-old from Oakland, was taken by ambulance to a nearby school where a helicopter was waiting. He was then airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

The incident is under investigation.
