Suspect Who Barricaded Himself With Baby Inside Newark Apartment Surrenders To Police After 12-Hour Standoff

NEWARK (CBS SF) – A domestic violence suspect who holed up in his home with his baby for 12 hours in a standoff with police surrendered Friday night, and the child is safely in custody.

Officers first went to the home in the 36700 block of Sycamore Street at 9:14 a.m. Friday to deliver a copy of an emergency protective order to a domestic violence victim.

When they arrived, however, they found the suspect in the domestic violence incident, Rudy Soto, 37, inside the apartment. They attempted to contact him but he refused to speak to them, police said.

Officers initially feared the victim in the case was inside, but determined that she was at work and Soto was home with their 1-year-old son.

Police negotiated with Soto for around 12 hours before he left the house, pushing his son in a stroller. The boy is safe, and has been reunited with his mother.

Soto has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of felony domestic violence, burglary and resisting and delaying officers.

Police said Soto has been involved in two other domestic violence incidents in the past two weeks, and a warrant was out for his arrest.
