Man Soliciting Money For Abused Kids In Newark Arrested On Child Abuse Warrant
NEWARK (CBS SF) -- An Oakland man was arrested in Newark Friday after officers discovered he had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, a police commander said.
Police responded to Food Maxx supermarket at 39966 Cedar Blvd. at 9:22 a.m. after the store manager called to report a solicitor disturbing the customers, Cmdr. Mike Carroll said.
The solicitor, 41-year-old Alvin Porterle was reportedly harassing customers and not following the store's soliciting policy, Carroll said.
Police discovered Porterle had two outstanding warrants for his arrest, one for child abuse, disturbing the peace, domestic violence and battery, and the other for being under the influence, Carroll said.
The officers served Porterle the warrants and arrested him, he said.
The commander said there isn't an easy way to resolve a disturbance case—especially without a victim—but the fact that he had warrants for his arrest made it easy, he said.
Porterle was soliciting customers to raise money for abused children and women, Carroll said.
"Ironic comes to mind," Carroll said.
It was unknown if Porterle was raising money for a legitimate cause, Carroll said.
Porterle was booked into the Santa Rita Jail.
