Man Arrested For Stealing AC Transit Bus, Leading Cops On Long Chase
OAKDALE, Stanislaus County (KPIX 5) - A man has been arrested for allegedly stealing an Alameda County Transit bus in San Francisco and driving it 100 miles to the Northern California town of Oakdale.
The bus was taken from the temporary Transbay Terminal in San Francisco around 9:00 a.m. Friday, AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson told KPIX 5.
Johnson said the bus was parked, closed and locked at the terminal.
"We do have some systematic that need to be followed in order to board a bus and certainly to start a bus and drive off with it. We are assuming whoever did this had some prior knowledge of that protocol and was able to do that," Johnson said.
CBS Sacramento reported a shirtless man was taken into custody Friday morning in Oakdale on charges of reckless driving, failure to yield, and grand theft.
No one was on the bus, no one was injured.
California Highway Patrol officers spotted the bus and chased it into the Oakdale area, according to the CHP.
Johnson said the bus was a spare bus and that it had GPS on board and that was how the CHP tracked it. CHP officers also put road spikes down causing the bus to stop because of flat tires.
The bus was stopped at Highway 120 and Sawyer Avenue in Oakdale.
