Major Work Wrapping Up On New Bay Bridge Span, Could Open Early
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Caltrans announced on Monday morning that all major work was wrapping up on the eastern span of the Bay Bridge and that an announcement on whether the bridge would open early could be made at the "chain cutting" ceremony in the afternoon.
Andrew Gordon, a Caltrans spokesman, told the media at a press conference that principal work is being completed, including striping work at the tunnel and the toll plaza as well as the placement of road signs, barrier rails and delineators. Significant clean up work, however, was still needed.

"They are also wrapping up the major placement of the temporary bike connector. There is still some striping work that has to be done on the bike path as well as the paving at the ground level to get you on the temporary connector but again, all principal work is kind of wrapping up," he said.
Gordon said that there has been no decision yet on when the bridge will be opened and that a "slight assessment" will be made about noon to determine just how much clean up and work will need to be done.
"We are hoping that some kind of announcement could get made at the ceremony," he said referring to the opening ceremony that was scheduled for 3 p.m.
