Major Detour, Bypass Set For San Francisco Doyle Drive Construction Project
SAUSALITO (KCBS) - A significant detour is being put into place later this year to accommodate the ongoing construction project along Doyle Drive, one of the key approaches to the Golden Gate Bridge.
Doyle Drive, as it is currently configured, will be torn down and commuters will be redirected to a bypass for several years while the section of roadway is rebuilt - a more than $1 billion construction project.
KCBS' Bob Melrose Reports:
One key element of the construction takes place later this year, when the drive will be closed entirely for a three-day stretch. It has not yet been determined when the closure will take place, but by all accounts it will happen in the very near future. Transit officials want drivers to know it's coming - to help temper any gridlock or confusion that may result.
"The Golden Gate Bridge will remain open as will Highway 1 up to 19th Avenue but Doyle Drive after Highway 1 to Richardson, Lombard and the Marina, will be closed," outlined project spokeswoman Molly Graham about the upcoming closure. "We're hoping that by the end of the year we'll be able to switch traffic permanently off of Doyle Drive and onto the temporary bypass. What that does is move traffic out of the way of construction, keeps it flowing and allows the project to be built, the second half."
Ultimately, Doyle Drive will be renamed Presidio Parkway. The project is slated to finish by 2015.
