Magnitude 6.7 Earthquake Strikes South Sandwich Islands Region
MARIPOSA (CBS SF) -- A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the South Sandwich Islands region Monday afternoon.
The quake struck at a depth of 10km about ninety miles NNW of Visokoi Island shortly after 2 p.m. Pacific Time.
Deeper quakes are less noticeable while a shallow quake--in the 0 to 40 mile depth range--can feel much stronger than their actual reported magnitude. Quakes just below the earth's surface, in the 0 to 10 miles range, can cause even more damage at lower magnitudes.
About an hour later a strong undersea earthquake struck near Japan.
