California State Senator Introduces Law That Would Require Ignition Locks For Drivers Convicted Of DUI
REDWOOD CITY (KCBS)— State Sen. Jerry Hill along with members of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) introduced legislation at a news conference Monday that would require all drivers convicted of DUI to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicles.
"Estimates are that if you get arrested for one DUI, you've probably been driving drunk 80 times before that," Hill said at the Redwood City news conference.
Law enforcement stood shoulder to shoulder behind Hill noting the problems with recidivism.

Nina Walker of San Diego with MADD spoke of a very personal reason for wanting the legislation passed.
"My life was changed forever when my 22-year-old daughter, Ginger, was killed in a drunk-driving crash," Walker said.
The requirement was recently recommended by federal transportation officials.
"Ignition interlock laws have proven to be effective in 24 states across the nation," Hill said.
A pilot program for ignition interlocks is already underway in four California counties including Alameda County.
