Lucky Bay Area High School Football Team Will Be Super Bowl Pros For A Day
SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) -- The St. Francis High football team is going to the Super Bowl.
On Friday, the St. Francis Lancers will morph into the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos, to help CBS's camera crews set up shots and angles for Sunday's big game at Levis Stadium in Santa Clara.
Think "queen for a day," but instead The Lancers will be "team for a day."
This will be a Super Bowl game of simulation. St. Francis sophomore Reed Vettel will be Denver's Payton Manning; school quarterback Kamalii Akina will play Carolina's Cam Newton (his favorite quarterback after Russell Wilson).
"They're all pretty excited about it," coach Greg Calcagno told the San Jose Mercury.
The team found out they got the gig about 6 weeks ago, thanks to one of their alums who recommended the Mountain View-based school to a friend at CBS and helped made it happen.
According to the Mercury, the network producer wants the team to do things like run long plays, and "throw fades to each corner of the end zones." The simulation will take about four hours and include a mock pre-game ceremony with former Super Bowl MVPs on the field.
Team lineman and captain Ryan Moles is totally stoked about what he believes may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
"I don't think maybe anyone from our team will ever get to play in an actual professional stadium," he said. "I think we're all going to cherish it, and it's something we'll never forget."
