Los Angeles Chapter President of NAACP Resigns Over Decision To Honor Donald Sterling
LOS ANGELES (KCBS) – The president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has resigned over the decision to honor Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
On Thursday, NAACP Interim President and CEO Lorraine Miller accepted the resignation of Leon Jenkins.
In his letter of resignation, Jenkins stated, "Please be advised that the legacy, history and reputation of the NAACP is more important to me than the presidency. In order to separate the Los Angeles NAACP and the NAACP from the negative exposure I have caused the NAACP, I respectfully resign my position as President of the Los Angeles NAACP."
At issue was plans the organization had made to honor Sterling with the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award, which was spearheaded by Jenkins.
National Basketball Association Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life on Tuesday over the racist comments he made in a recorded phone conversation.
