Locals Voice Concern Over Proposed San Jose Earthquakes Stadium
SAN JOSE (KCBS) – While tensions are mounting over a 49ers stadium in Santa Clara, another stadium battle is taking shape in the South Bay as well. The proposed San Jose Earthquakes soccer stadium is being opposed by some residents concerned about noise and traffic.
"I'm about a quarter of a mile away, and it's been kind of loud, especially because of the drums," said Scott Simpson, who lives near the team's current home at Buck Shaw Stadium on the Santa Clara University campus. "The drums are the worst thing."
Some residents near proposed site for a new stadium near the San Jose Airport have complained to the city about noise and traffic concerns. Team President Dave Kaval says they've already promised not to host any musical acts in the new stadium.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
"Without concerts, that will lessen the noise concerns in the surrounding community," said Kaval.
He is hoping the stadium plan will be approved when it goes before the planning commission next month.
"Obviously we want to get it approved as quickly as possible so that we can get to the ground breaking, and get the stadium open as soon as possible," said Kaval.
The quakes hope to launch their 2013 season in the new stadium.
