Livermore Man Allegedly Shot At Acquaintances, Ran From Police
LIVERMORE (CBS SF) -- A Livermore man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and other charges for allegedly shooting at two acquaintances Sunday night and then crashing his car through a fence when police chased him, authorities said.
Livermore police spokesman Steve Goard said officers responded to the 700 block of Holmes Street around 9:12 p.m. Sunday after receiving numerous 911 calls reporting that shots had been fired.
The officers saw a gray car leaving the area with its headlights off so they tried to make a traffic stop because they suspected it might have been used in the shooting but the car's driver tried to evade them and drove "recklessly" through residential streets, Goard said.
However, the car ultimately crashed through a fence at Del Valle High School, which is on Seventh Street between South I Street and South J Street, Goard said.
The driver, identified as Paul Victor Simmons, also known as Paul Muscat, tried to run from the officers but was apprehended, according to Goard.
Officers recovered a loaded handgun and a loaded handgun magazine, he said.
Investigators found that Simmons, 26, who is on probation for illegal firearms convictions, had fired multiple rounds at two men that he knows, although neither was injured, Goard said.
Investigators also discovered that the car Simmons was driving had been stolen, he said.
In addition to two counts of attempted murder, Simmons is being held on suspicion of one count each of evading police with reckless disregard for the public, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a prohibited person with ammunition and possession of a stolen vehicle.
