Little Big Town's 'Girl Crush' - Behind the Song
By Brian Ives
Little Big Town's Kimberly Schlapman told Radio.com that when she first heard the demo for "Girl Crush" (which was written by Lori McKenna, Liz Rose and Hillary Lindsey) that she wondered what the song is actually about. At first it seems to be about a girl who has a crush on another woman - which is still taboo in some circles. But it turns out that the narrator is obsessing about another woman because of jealousy; the "other" woman is with the man the narrator loves.
The members of the band, and presumably, much of the audience, hadn't heard of jealousy referenced in quite that way, in a song, or otherwise.
"Girl Crush" topped the US Hot Country Songs chart and hit #18 on the Billboard Hot 100. It's become something of a sensation: Miranda Lambert and Kelly Clarkson have each covered the song live; Leona Lewis and Adam Lambert performed the song as a duet on a TV special and even heavy metal band Halestorm has played the track.
Find out if "Girl Crush" wins any GRAMMYS at the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards, which will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 15. It will air on CBS at 8 PM ET.
