Legendary Oakland Jazz Trumpeter, Educator Khalil Shaheed Dies
OAKLAND (KCBS) - Khalil Shaheed, an Oakland jazz trumpeter famous for his ability to bridge distinct styles, died Friday after several years with lung cancer.
Up until three weeks, ago, the 63-year-old was still teaching Oaktown Jazz Workshops, the youth music program he founded in 1994. He opened a downtown venue for workshop students named after his mother, Nadine, last year.
The Chicago native, born Thomas Howard Hall, recorded with Jimi Hendrix before founding the Khalil Shaheed Quartet and the Mo' Rockin Project.
An active participant at the Masjidul Waritheen mosque, he traveled to Mecca for a hajj pilgrimage while receiving chemotherapy.
A prayer was scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Jess Spencer Mortuary in Castro Valley, followed by a 2 p.m. burial at Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward.
Shaheed is survived by his wife, Kate Shaheed and daughters Lina Shaheed and Savannah Harris, all from Oakland.
