Larry Magid: Facebook Offers More Security with 3rd-Party Apps
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is offering more privacy to its users when they log into third-party apps. Speaking in San Francisco at the social-media company's developers' conference on Wednesday, Zuckerberg made the announcement about how things are being restructured.
I'm always nervous when it comes to the 'Log-In with Facebook' button that you see on a lot of apps from news sites to numerous other places when using web browsers on smartphones, Macs or PCs.
Facebook Offers More Security with 3rd-Party Apps
I specifically get nervous about what information it's collecting and what it lets my Facebook friends see when it comes to my online activity. While the convenience can be nice I'm sure many of you share my apprehension in whether or not I should click this button.
Well, it turns out people like developers at Facebook feel the same way. From now on you can control what the app will disclose about you on a line-by-line basis.
Now, you can also log-on anonymously. Facebook still knows who you are, but the app developer doesn't until you decide to reveal your identity to that person.
It's a great move by the company, because they certainly want to be in a position where their customer base feels comfortable using them and sharing so much information.
