Larry Magid: Facebook Allows Younger Users to Post Publicly
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — Facebook is changing its settings so that those younger than 18 years old can post items that can be seen by the public.
Up until now, those between 13 and 17 could not share comments and photos more broadly than to friends of friends.
By and large I think it's a good thing. If you think about it young people have always had a voice in society.
However, parents and kids alike need to think about their privacy and what they can and can't say in public. For example, don't post anything that could put you in danger. Posting on Facebook and other forms of social media should be thought of as if it were broadcasting to the whole world.
Most kids get it, but I think they do need that kind of media literacy and discretion. It really doesn't hurt to have that conversation with your teens, especially now that they are able to post publicly.
