KPIX Poll: Californians Support Gay Marriage, Want Prop. 8 Overturned
SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) - On the eve of a U.S. Supreme Court hearing over California's Proposition 8 same-sex marriage ban, a newly released KPIX-TV poll finds a majority of the state's residents support gay marriage and believe the nation's high court should overturn the law forbidding it.
The poll, conducted for KPIX 5 by the firm SurveyUSA, shows 67% of Californians believe same-sex couples should be allowed to share in the legal benefits of marriage. Limiting marriage to heterosexual couples was supported by just 30%, with 3% of Californians undecided.
A majority of Californians (52%) also believe that the U.S. Supreme Court should uphold lower court rulings in 2010 and 2012 that found Prop. 8 unconstitutional. Only 32% felt the justices should overturn those prior rulings, while 17% were unsure.
The KPIX poll of 500 adults in the Golden State was conducted from March 22 to 24 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2%.
