King Tides Swell Along Coastal Areas As Christmas Full Moon Nears
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Bay Area residents are being warned of potential flooding along coastal areas as the highest tides of the year swell along Ocean Beach and the San Francisco Bay.
The tides are even higher due to the gravitational pull of the rare full moon on Christmas day.
Wednesday and Thursday's tides will be the highest at 6.86 feet and 6.87 feet and will come around 9 a.m. and 10 a.m., respectively, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Christmas morning the tide will be the highest at 6.77 feet at about 10:45 a.m.
Meantime, a small craft advisory is in effect through Thursday afternoon, with anticipated waves between 5 and 7 feet and occasional wind gusts to almost 50 mph.
Meantime, coastal residents whose property has flooded should pick up sand bags.
