SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- A San Francisco swimmer is trying to do something no woman has ever done before, braving shark-infested waters to swim from the Farallon Islands to San Francisco.
Kim Chambers left on a boat with family and supporters headed for the islands Friday night. At 11:30 p.m., Chambers will jump in the water, touch a buoy and start swimming the 30 miles from the Farallon Islands to the Golden Gate Bridge.

The swim is expected to take between 13 and 18 hours depending on the conditions. Chambers can't touch the boat during the swim and will eat every 30 minutes to refuel.
Before heading to the Farallones, Chambers told KPIX 5 that she is mentally and physically prepared to face off with the Pacific Ocean.
"There's nothing more gratifying than pushing yourself and discovering really what you're made of and what you can do with your body and your mind if you let it," Chambers said. "This swim is scary, but it's also so exciting."
For Chambers, this is not her first long-distance, open ocean swim. Last year, she completed the Oceans 7 Challenge, the seven toughest swims in the world, including the English Channel.
