Kentucky County Clerk Who Denied Same-Sex Marriage Licenses Switches To Republican
WASHINGTON (KPIX 5 ) -- The Kentucky County Clerk at the center of the fight over same-sex marriage is switching political parties.
Until Saturday, Kim Davis had been a lifelong Democrat but now she has changed her political affiliation to Republican.
She made the announcement in Washington while attending a voters' summit.
Davis' refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples landed her in jail a two weeks ago. The 39-year-old, three-time divorcee defended her actions, citing "God's authority" and her belief that gay marriage is a sin.
A judge released her and she's back on the job. Now she is under fire for signing the licenses with the phrase "pursuant to federal court order," instead of her name and title.
Friday, her lawyer, Charla Bansley said Davis was switching to Republican because she did not get any support from the Democratic party or leaders.
"The party left me," Davis told Bansley.
Davis said the rest of her family has left the Democratic party, as well.
