KCBS In Depth: Sports, Race And Fallout From Donald Sterling's Banishment From The NBA
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — After audio recorded racist comments made by L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling to his girlfriend were publicly released last month, National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver fined him $2.5 million and banned him from attending NBA games, practices, the team's facilities and all personnel decisions. In addition, the NBA's advisory/finance committee voted to unanimously to pursue Silver's plan to oust Sterling and complete an ownership change.
This week, KCBS In Depth co-hosts Jan McMillan and Ed Cavagnaro talk with sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, a professor emeritus at UC Berkeley specializing in the sociology of sport, family, race and ethnic relations.
Edwards told In Depth that not only was Sterling's punishment appropriate but that it was "exemplary" of the way that such incidents will have to be addressed in the future.
"There are going to be many more of these across a number of activities in the world of sports," he said.
