Judge Upholds Brentwood Students' Suspension Over High School Pranks
BRENTWOOD (KCBS) – A Contra Costa Superior Court Judge has upheld the decision of a Brentwood high school principal to suspend 30 students, who were involved in a series of senior pranks.
The students at Heritage High School will not be allowed to participate in commencement ceremonies, but the school is now giving them the chance to make up final exams they will miss during their suspensions, if their teachers are willing.
KCBS' Chris Filippi Reports:
Attorney Peter Johnson, who represents some of the students, said the case will go back to court next week to decide if the teachers will be required to give those exams.
"If we prevail on the fact that the suspension was wrong or that their due process was violated, than they're not going to be able to issue the zero grade for the failure to take the final," said Johnson.
Heritage High principal Larry Oshodi handed out the penalties after some seniors ran around campus with their feet covered in paint and left a lamb chained up on campus.
He said students were forewarned that there would be no tolerance for graduation pranks.
Many of the students and their parents have complained that the punishment goes too far and some said this could even affect whether or not they graduate.
