John Madden – The Raiders Super Bowl Celebration That Wasn't
OAKLAND (KCBS) – Preparations continue for the Golden State Warriors victory parade in Oakland on Friday, to celebrate the team's first NBA Championship in 40 years.
Coach John Madden reminisced with the KCBS Morning Crew about how the city of Oakland celebrated the Raiders Super Bowl victory.
"I think we went down to the Oakland Coliseum. I wasn't too excited about it because I was upset," Madden said. "The mayor at the time said right before the Super Bowl, if the Raiders win, we're going to have some kind of acceptance thing for them. And if they lose, we're not going to have anything."
Coach Madden did share one interesting tidbit. "They had a portrait of me that they were going to give to me if we won. And if we lost, they weren't going to give it to me," he said chuckling. Madden said he wasn't sure what they were going to do with it had they happened to lose Super Bowl XI. But no concerns, they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 32-14. "I took it [the portrait] and never looked back. I think I gave it to someone."
Overall, Coach Madden said "it's not really implanted deeply in my memory."
Expect a bit more excitement and a lot more memories from the Warriors celebration in Oakland on Friday.
