Jobs in Jeopardy At Bay Area Postal Processing Facilities
BURLINGAME (KCBS) - The jobs of more than 1,000 Northern California postal workers are in jeopardy, now that 5 processing facilities have been targeted for closure, including one in Burlingame and one in Petaluma.
Processing facilities in Stockton, Eureka and Redding are also among the 250 centers nationwide whose closures could save the U.S. Postal Service an estimated $3 billion annually.
A spokesperson for the agency said efforts were underway to secure alternate positions for those affected, but that doesn't allay the fears of those who have worked for the postal service for decades.
"Here's a person with 30 years thinking that they're getting ready to retire, all they need is a couple more years to go. Is this place going to be around two years from now?" questioned one man who described himself as a veteran worker at the Burlingame center.

A timetable for closures has not been released.
In July, the USPS also released a list of more than 3,600 post offices it wants closed nationwide, including 13 in the Bay Area, also as a cost-cutting measure.
