Job Growth In Bay Area Outpaces Other Parts Of Country
SAN JOSE (KCBS) - Federal statistics released Wednesday indicate strong growth at Bay Area technology companies may be responsible for job creation that outpaces much of the country.
Last year, more than 75,000 jobs were added in the San Jose-San Francisco-Oakland metropolitan area, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:
Cloud storage, cloud computing and mobile devices have made the job market in Silicon Valley very robust, said Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Ventures Silicon Valley.
"It's also in some interesting areas like social media and Internet-based commerce," he said.
The federal data show about 30,000 jobs were created in San Jose last year.
"Companies want to be here because of the innovation that goes on, and those that are here want to stay here and expand here," said Mayor Chuck Reed.
Reed said the city has faced fierce competition from other parts of the world trying to lure tech business elsewhere.
"They get really nice deals from other states and other countries, so we have to compete with the whole world for the growth that our companies are experiencing," Reed said.
The report ranked San Francisco ranked 7th and San Jose 14th for job growth.
