Jan Wahl Movie Review: 'Casino Jack' & 'True Grit'
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews the movie "True Grit."
The film looks at the Oklahoma Territory post Civil War as a 14-year-old girl is determined to avenge her father's killing.
Based on the Charles Portis novel and a remake of the 1969 John Wayne movie, Wahl says Joel and Ethan Coen give us a movie that is cinematically beautiful and graphically gruesome.
Jan said although it is not the best of the Coens, there are two terrific performances: newcomer Hailee Steinfeld plays the smart and vengeful girl and Matt Damon plays a Texas Ranger who is after the same killer.
Jan also said "Casino Jack," a movie about the life of Washington D.C. Lobbyist Jack Abramoff, is interesting and entertaining.
Kevin Spacey plays Abramoff, who was sent to prison in 2006 for his role in a corruption scandal. Jon Lovitz also has a leading role in the film, playing a sleazy businessman.
Finally, among the movies that are currently playing, Jan suggests "The King's Speech, The Fighter, Inside Job and Made in Dagenham."
