Jan Wahl Movie Review: 'Star Trek: Into Darkness'

(KCBS) – KCBS Entertainment Editor Jan Wahl reviews J.J. Abrams' blockbuster sequel, "Star Trek: Into Darkness" starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto & Zoe Saldana.

KCBS Entertainment Reporter Jan Wahl:

Jan Wahl Movie Review: Star Trek: Into Darkness (PG-13)

STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS (PG-13)

There are aspects of this film that work: the familiar characters of Kirk, Spock, Scotty and the rest of the Enterprise are perfectly cast. I like an intelligent, articulate villain, and we have that with the BBC's Sherlock Holmes' Benedict Cumberbatch.

However, this popcorn morality play is more blockbuster summer fun than thoughtful science fiction. I missed really smart, emotional moments, a emotionally resonant story mixed in with these clever characters.

But, at least it's brash, full of action and filled with moments of humor. Like The Great Gatsby, known here as the Good Gatsby, this one is three hats and worth seeing if you want to blast off into escapism.

Three hats.
