Jackknifed Big-Rig Leaks Diesel On I-880 In Oakland
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Caltrans crews are working to make repairs to an Oakland freeway damaged Tuesday morning when a big-rig jackknifed, destroying part of a safety barrier along the highway, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The CHP received a report of the crash on southbound Interstate 880 at westbound Interstate 980 at 10:17 a.m., Oakland Area CHP Officer Sam Morgan said.
The tractor-trailer hit the sidewall, damaging an approximately 10-foot section of the barrier, Morgan said. The vehicle began leaking diesel fuel, which flowed into a drain feeding into Lake Merritt, he said.
As of 3:40 p.m., the freeway was still partially blocked although the big-rig had been removed from the roadway, Morgan said.
Caltrans crews were still working to assess the damage.
"The weather is hampering things out there," Morgan said.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported, Morgan said.
