It's Not Too Late For Your 2015 New Year's Resolution
KPIX 5 Morning Weather Anchor Roberta Gonzales answers the questions you never get to ask on-air.
Q: I enjoy watching your morning newscast. I like the personality between you and your fellow news anchors. This is not so much a weather question, but the year is almost over and it got me thinking: Have you met any of your New Year's Resolutions? Thought about any for 2016? -Mario Merlini; San Francisco
A: Well, that question came from left field, but I love it Mario! Let me think…actually I am working on ONE of my New Year Resolutions now!
First off Mario, you made me stop and wonder, how did New Year's Resolutions begin? I looked up the answer with history.com and here's what I found…
Way back in the day (about 4,000 years ago) it was Julius Caesar who decided to make January 1 as the first day of the year. He did this after the month's namesake: Janus (that's where the name January comes from). Janus was the Roman god of beginnings. With two faces, Janus could not only look back at the past, but could look forward into the future. As time passed, this is how New Year's resolutions began; as a chance to look forward at new beginnings and possibilities.
While I look ahead towards my Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday plans, it really isn't too early to start hammering out thoughts for New Year's resolutions for 2016! As far as "looking back" as the Roman God Janus could do, I did accomplish one of my resolutions! It's something I am working on now -- learning how to play a musical instrument!
I have always felt I lack talent. Sure I can play a tambourine and cow bell with rhythm, but I have never played a "real" instrument and learn to read music. I've just never had the time, but I did have a lot of fear! Until I met Brian. And Brian is teaching me how to play….THE DRUMS!
Professional drummer and instructor Brian Camara performs in three local bands (Ruckatan, AbelSound and Mirage) and is a drum instructor at Garage Band Academy in Pleasanton. I have never played the drums in my life, but I couldn't have picked a better resolution, instrument or instructor! My biggest surprise during my lessons? As I am learning about music and its notes, I have come to realize, reading music is a beautiful language of its own! A language I hope to understand in the years to come. That's a gift to myself!
Thanks for your question Mario! What is your 2016 New Year Resolution? I want to hear from all of you! It's not too early to give it some thought!
