Insulted Bay Area Woman, 2 Others Arrested For Man's Murder In SoCal
GLENDALE, Los Angeles County (CBS SF) -- Two Bay Area residents were among three suspects arrested in connection with the killing of a Florida man in Southern California on Saturday, according to Glendale police.
The victim, Phillip Niles Jr., 25, of Daytona Beach, Florida, moved to California and was living in Los Angeles. Niles went to a friend's apartment in Glendale after a night out and was joined by two women he had just met at a nightclub, police said.
At some point, one of the women, Dezerea Lyons, 18, of Napa, felt insulted by comments Niles made and she made several threats to him.
"You don't know me," she told him, according to the Los Angeles Times. "You don't know what I'm capable of."
Lyons is suspected of orchestrating the violent attack on Niles. Lyons called Laquan Parker, 24, of Suisun City, and Brandon Perkins, 26, of Stockton, on a phone, according to police.
Around 4 a.m., as Niles walked Lyons and the other woman to their car at the apartment, Parker and Perkins confronted Niles and shot him multiple times, police said.
Niles ran a short distance and collapsed on the lawn of a nearby residence, police said.
Lyons, her female friend, Perkins and Parker fled in a vehicle, and Parker and Perkins held Lyons' female friend, who had no involvement in the killing, against her will at a Comfort Inn hotel in Monrovia until the following day, police said.
Detectives canvassed witnesses and evidence for leads and arrested Lyons, Parker and Perkins at the hotel on Sunday, police said.
All three were booked on suspicion of murder, and Parker and Perkins also were booked for false imprisonment, police said. The three were held under $2 million bail.
Detectives recovered two handguns that are believed to be the murder weapons from Parker and Perkins, police said.
UPDATE, Monday 3:50 p.m.: The Los Angeles District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday that Parker and Perkins were charged with the murder of Niles. Both Parker and Perkins have been previously convicted of gun charges. Lyons has not been charged in the case.
