Indie Rappers Dizzy Wright, Casey Veggies, Pell And More To Perform Eric Garner Benefit In Oakland
Update: After this article was posted, Erica Garner, daughter of the late Eric Garner, got in touch with CBS SF. She will now be hosting the event.
Inspired by the music community's reactions to the death of Eric Garner in New York, Marin high school students Matt Geffen and Timmy Stabler were moved to launch the upcoming Concert for Justice next month in Oakland.
After teaming up with Oakland's own production organization HGMNY, who was already planning a similar event, they booked several on-the-rise, socially-conscious rappers for the benefit, including Dizzy Wright, Casey Veggies, Pell (who recently played Noise Pop in San Francisco) and more.
"'Concert for Justice' is a night to reflect on civil injustices such as the deaths of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Oscar Grant and other victims of civil injustice through the unparalleled power of music," Geffen wrote in a release. "As we tried to make sense of the tragic events in Staten Island and elsewhere, we found some consolation in the work of the artists and individuals dedicated to using their influence to promote change and equality."
But the purpose of the night's event isn't just to put on a concert. Geffen, Stabler, and HGMNY plan to donate 100% of the proceeds to Eric Garner's family.
Concert for Justice will be held at The New Parish in Oakland April 9. Get your tickets here.
