In San Bruno Neighborhood, Focus Turns to Cleanup
SAN BRUNO (KCBS) -- The focus in San Bruno is now turning to the cleanup of the homes that were destroyed in last week's fatal explosion and fire.
Residents who lost their homes in the fire have been told they have two options.
They can do it themselves and pay for it or they can sign a permit for San Mateo County to work with the state to clear the lots.
"The site will be cleared. They go through a number of steps to clear that site. Testing will be done," said San Mateo County Health Director Dean Peterson. "At the end of the process, each property will have a certification that indicates that this property is safe and is healthy."
Peterson said that the way the site sits at this time, there are no health concerns as long as individuals are not on the property creating dust.
Burned out residents like Carolyn Gray are still weighing their options.
"The more people that sign up for it the better," she said. "Because we could have it but our neighbors might not. And if the neighbors don't have it, than we could be dealing with some problems."
37 homes were destroyed in last week's explosion and fire.
