Iconic Nut Tree Road Sign In Vacaville Comes Down
VACAVILLE (CBS SF) -- A piece of Bay Area history is gone.
The iconic Nut Tree sign has been a fixture along Interstate 80 for more than 70 years. In a matter of days, a crane took down the 72-foot sign that took 2 years to install.
The beloved road sign didn't go down without a fight. A group of protesters led by Supervisor John Vasquez came to the site and demanded some sort of preservation plan. By Wednesday afternoon, a plan between the city and the developer was reached to put the 3-panel sign in an as-yet-undetermined museum.
The family-owned business it stood for is long gone. Nut Tree fruit farm was a tourist attraction for celebrities and regular folk. Even the Queen of England once visited there.
