Hundreds Of Berkeley High School Students March To UC Campus For Michael Brown, Eric Garner Demonstration
BERKELEY (KCBS)— Hundreds of Berkeley High School students gathered on the UC Berkeley campus to rally in support of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Many of the students were happy to have such a large gathering at the demonstration Wednesday.
Students left classes and marched to Sproul Plaza on the UC campus in solidarity for the two unarmed black men killed by police in separate high-profile cases where no charges were filed against police by grand juries in both Ferguson and New York.
The high school's Black Student Union President Khadija Means noted the significance of where the free speech movement started decades ago.
"In a lot of ways Berkeley is a very progressive place and we're going to tell the nation it's time, because it ends today," said Means.
Ayana Preston said it's important that her generation speaks out.
"It's up to the young generation to make change and if we can show that us as teenagers can go out and be passionate about this, then that means something. It should mean something to society and the system," she said.
The students held a "die-in" where they lay limp bodied on the ground in silence.
Both students said they were pleased that two-thirds of Berkeley High's student body attended.
